The Microsoft Zune is still alive, barely, and I have one, a 30G model that is used to carry many playlists of songs as a backup player, or as a mobile player to rehearse with. The digital FM radio works well also.
I do not use the bluetooth sharing 'social' concept they included from the start.
The Zune will be useful as a backup player, but I do find the ipod much easier to program, thanks to the powerful itunes connection.
